For the Love of Wood: Beautiful and Functional Woodworking
Dr. David Johnson
August 7 through September 2, 2018
Reception Saturday, August 11, 1-4 pm
Life has a way of bringing us full circle. David Johnson learned his “love of wood” from his Grandfather at an early age. But life took a different path for Johnson with medical school and a career as an emergency room physician. After this career was cut short by a stroke, which left his speech, reading, and writing abilities severely impaired, he returned to his love of woodworking.
Johnson is August's featured artist at Wild Hearts Gallery. The public is invited to the opening reception on Saturday, August 11, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. featuring his colorful cutting boards, trays, candle holders, earring racks, tables and more. Light refreshments will be served.
Following lengthy rehabilitation, when Johnson was no longer able to work in medicine, he built a woodworking shop in his Placitas home of 35 years and rekindled his love of woodworking. After more than two decades working in his studio, Johnson is an accomplished woodworker with a large following. Designed to be functional as well as beautiful, his pieces often mix many different types of hardwoods together. What we might call a flaw in a piece of wood, Johnson calls an opportunity to add an inlay of turquoise or other material to enhance the beauty of the wood.
In the interview, he told us “Woodworking allows me a creative way to express myself. I enjoy working with exotic woods such as Ebony, Purple Heart, and Olive Wood because of the variety in their color and grain. Each of my pieces is individually hand crafted and unique”.
