"It takes a village" to nurture Wild Hearts Gallery ... a village beyond the participating painters, photographers, pottery, print makers, glass and mosaic artists and jewelers in the gallery. It begins with our customers who have supported the gallery since the day we opened and comes full circle with select local authors, poets, printmakers and card makers who have been invited into the gallery with their original works. Here they are:
Dr. Gary Brower: A performance poet and specialist in Hispanic poetry, he has taught at the University of Southern California, the University of California at Los Angeles and the University of New Mexico as well as in graduate programs in Spain and Mexico. Fluent in Spanish, French and Portuguese, his poetry as well as his translations have been printed in numerous publications. He has worked as a journalist, news editor and managing editor. His recent books are available in the gallery.

Dr. Doris Fields: A performance artist and poet whose work has appeared in numerous publications. She holds a doctorate in International Communication, is an activist and scholar of health care, a Board member and past president of the NM Humanities Council. She organizes special events for the gallery and creates wonderful cards. (PS, we have the largest selection of art cards in the area.) |
The late Jim Fish of Anasazi Fields Winery: Our good friend and poet Jim Fish left this world doing what he loved - hiking - and the loss was a huge shock to this community. His poetry was about the Placitas we love. He held a PhD in Chemical Engineering and did Post Doctoral studies in Mexico City. A man of many interests, Jim was inspired by nature all his life, which is evident in his published poetry, his sculptures and photography. Download and enjoy one of our favorite poems below. Jim's most recent books of poetry are available in the gallery while supplies last.

Lisa Bear Goldman: The author grew up in New Mexico and Arizona and has always had a special love for the Southwest. She spent her early years in Albuquerque and Santa Fe, New Mexico, and then attended the University of Arizona in Tucson where she completed her Master’s Degree in Rehabilitation Counseling. The gallery currently has her award-winning book "Proud Little Burro", Ages 5-12, Illustrated by Patrice Schooley. |
Larry Goodell: A performance poet and author of several volumes of poetry including his newest, "Nothing to Laugh About" which is available in the gallery. Aside from his poetry, he has developed a valuable archive (audio as well of photos) of several generations of American writers and Placitas' notables. Visit his website to learn more about him, his archives and his poetry. |
Dr. David Hoekenga: Physician and author David Hoekenga came to New Mexico in the seventies and never found a reason to leave the friendly people and panoramic vistas. He has written several books including a mystery series around locations such as Santa Fe, Placitas, Jemez, Taos and other places familiar to us. Most of his books are available in the gallery.
Evey Jones: After a BFA degree in painting from Cooper Union, Evey Jones journeyed West, landing in New Mexico where she has made her home for over 40 years. Her time is here in the studio or traveling to Italy, each place feeding and complementing her life. Her work is born from experiences that produce a series of four to eight prints each year. A founding member of Wild Hearts Gallery, Evey will continue to grace the gallery with her prints and cards.

Carol Ordogne is a Placitas plein air painter whose representations of local free range horses, bobcats and other creatures captivate viewers in her large selection of greeting cards. She also has a selection of small, hand colored linocut prints. Her latest is a delightful children's book of her linocut prints. Carol is also a founding member of the gallery, but grandchildren and recent acquisition of a motor home has called her to explore new horizons.
Steve Palmer began his art career after rtiring and moving to New Mexico. He spent the previous 40+ years as a Professor of Psychology and Cognitive Science at U.C. Berkeley where he taught courses and published research in the field of vision science, the topic of his pioneering book, Vision Science: Photons to Phenomenology (MIT Press 1999). He interest in visual aesthetics made becoming an artist a natural progression in his life's work. Though no longer a full time gallery member, Steve continues to show cards and prints and produces the gallery's beautiful virtual tour each month.
